Inspirations ….

Sonalika Sahay for Dev R Nil show.

I had a privilege to do makeup to this amazing model for Dev R Nil fashion show for Kolkata Fashion week Sept 2009.

This Bengali designer duo is famous for their lovely Indian attires and really beautiful palette of colors. Their inspiration came from a traditional Bengali woman who loves to do her makeup. It's a trend of traditional Bengali women to don themselves with lovely black kohls and bright maroon lipsticks. We did the same for the fashion show but with a little more panache.

Over a moisturized and primed skin apply Shiseido Stick Foundation in a shade darker than real skin color to get a tanned yet healthier look. Since this stick foundation suffices as concealer and foundation and dries to a powder finish, it becomes a versatile product in one single stick. Dust some MAC Prep n prime translucent finishing powder to set the foundation.

Dust some Max Factor blush in Naturelle (Cinnamon colored blush) on the cheek bones for a little contour. Dust some shimmery bronze like MAC Refined Golden gently over the cheeks for a sun kissed Kolkata glow.

Prime the lids with Clarins Instant Light Perfecting Touch eyeshadow primer for a long lasting eye makeup. Dust MAC eyeshadow in Dark Edge in the crease and outer corners. Use a bone-beige highlighter like MAC Nylon on the brow bone. Apply a shimmery beige eyeshadow like beige brown from Clinique Color Surge eye shadow in Spicy. Trace pencil eyeliner like MAC Smolder or Engraved near the upper lash line. Blend it with a smudger brush to stain the lash roots. Apply a thick line using Clinique Brush on Cream liner in True Black starting from the middle of lid towards the inner and outer corners. This line should grade from thin in the inner corners to thicker in the outer corners and then wing it outwards and upwards. Fill in the inner rims with a smudge proof kajal like Clinique Quickliner for Eyes in Really Black. Get thicker and longer lashes with several coats of Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara in Black.

If you are on a budget, then use the L'Oreal eyeshadow trio in Doutzen Kroes. It has similar colors that look fantastic. Use Bourjois Intense Black eye liner and L'Oreal Superliner in Black for creating the effect.

Dab 4-5 coats of Clinique Long last lipstick on Merlot and Rubellite with some Butter shine lipstick in Cranberry cream over the centre of lips.

This is a very conventional look and if you want to really perk it up, apply a turquoise liner on the lower lids. I also like Clinique Superfine liner in Midnight Blue or Skyscraper or Quickliner for eyes in Grape or Blue Sky.

This look should be sported with traditional Indian sarees to make an impact. But understanding the versatility of the look make your own ideas too.

Till then,
