Makeup Masterclass : Creating Classic Eyes PART 2

In continuation to the previous article, this is a pic heavy tutorial giving explanation of how to do a classic eye with soft contouring so that the eyes look bigger and defined. I have used satiny and matte colors to give that perfect day look apt for occasions and office wear alike. Just a slick of bright lipstick coverts office to occasion.

Prime the eyes with a primer that disappears into your skin and dries into a slight powdery finish. This keeps the shadows from getting stuck to a wet surface which could be quite difficult while blending. I apply my primer from the lashline to the lids and also on the lower lid for concealing and allowing the products to stay put. Its ok to have some primer on the brows too as it helps keep brow shadows in place.

Lining the lash line makes lashes look fuller and also help defining eyes. This can be done with any matte colors ranging from matte black to quite light red brown depending on the occasion. Also soften the lines so that it all looks muted and lash line looks stained. I prefer starting from a point in the inner corners, join the dots and end up at the outer corners.

As mentioned in the previous post, lining the lash line and not the inner rims can actually make eyes look bigger. Its optional but putting in a beige liner in the rims makes eyes even bigger. A perfect trick for small eyes. Lining the inner rims can make small eyes look beady while with this trick that do look quite big. Always smoke the color out before pencil dries off.

Start defining the crease from the outer edge and corner. This gives an idea of how much contouring you need and is a pioneering step towards getting the perfect almond shaped eye irrespective of whatever eye shape you have. I have chosen a matte brown with plum tones here, but a warmer brown would do wonders too.

Grading the color from dark outwards to light inwards is the key to a perfect contour. The axis of the face should be highlighted with shadows on perimeter of the face, speaking geometrically. So I defined the outer corner with a nearly black-brown matte eyeshadow. Blending into that plummy brown in the outer corners and a slightly soft grey brown in the middle and inner corners. Here I have used 3 browns from the same family.

Always blend and define crease with open eyes so that you can gauge the shape. The faux crease should always be above the natural crease line to give an illusion of a bigger lid. Also I have combed brows with a brow comb. You dont want to define them during the day.

To bring light to all the darkness I have highlighted the inner corners and brow bone with a matte bone color. This may look weird now but when the look is completed everything pulls together. That matte bone color instantly brightens the inner corners. A shimmery substitute is perfect for occasions.

Since greige (grey+beige) is 'in' thanks to uber chic Lady Gaga I have applied a similar color on the entire lid (ideally middle and inner one third) and blended sideways. You can see how my lid looks bigger and different from the first 2 pictures.

Don't miss the mascara as it not only completes the look but also gives you a wide-eyed look. You can go with a thicker mascara that has more waxes to give your lashes a natural dimension as opposed to a full blown voluminous look. Ideal for day wear.
