My Photography Staples

This picture is copyrighted. Please do not copy.

This is my post from Blackberry so its going to be a bit random and also it would be a bit lost for a well planned article so please mind this!

I've been immensely busy for the whole week with some paid/unpaid (which I hate) photohoots and its been real fun working with this amazing photographer Brijesh who shoots magic with his camera. Since I worked quite a bit and also have a bit of understanding of the cameras this article would be about some amazing stuff in makeup that got to use and get the best pictures.

So let us see my green room specials......

Camera friendly makeup!

Makeup and Photography are integral parts of any picture. Whether its your day to day life, whether its a photoshoot or whether its all about getting married. Camera captures the reality that human eye overlooks and of course camera does not have a brain. Makeup being one of the underestimated elements of an Indian function I have seen people looking wither hyperpigmented or ghostly when it comes to be being photographed.

Inside a camera there run a lot of systems and involves a lot of science. Camera especially when assisted with a flash penetrates into the subcutaneous layers and catches every flaw your skin has making it look ugly in photographs even if the person looks beautiful to human eye. 'Posing' for a camera is important too and its crucial that one looks in the camera and poses (at least for one picture) as the one who sees the photograph would not get an idea of what is happening here.

I do not charge at any beauty blogger here, but I have seen blogs where people post the most ridiculously blurred pictures and atrocious poses in front of the camera and get an appreciation which is naive and fake. Some innocent pose that is captured on camera could be perceived as if someone is sneezing or coughing and they have been photographed and looks weird. For a perfect picture, I asked a renowned photographer Jaf and he candidly said 'Chin down, eyes up and a light above you which is 45 degrees inclined. Camera in front of your face, some makeup and you end up with a good shot.' For those who may not know photography, every pro photographer takes almost 400-500 pictures to finalize on the best ones so being amateurs we should at least get 50 pictures and decide which one is the best.

I am in talks with some brilliant photographers to give tips on posing in front of the camera which could be useful to bloggers (fashion and beauty) and soon shall be able to get some precious insights that could help me and probably my friends out there who are perfect or who need some help (and don't show).

So lets see how to do makeup for a photograph (whatever the occasion is).........

Makeup Shoot !! Part 3

This post concludes the looks that I did for the recent photoshoot. I am planning to post an article on how to do makeup for photography (to encourage better pictures and not look washed out in the camera for all those who need a bit of help or feel so).
I requested the photographer to allow me to this look and named it aptly as 'Ultra violet'. Its not unknown that I am a huge fan of purples and lilacs and here was a golden (purple) chance to experiment.

This photograph is a copyright of Bhawana Sharma Photography

So let me tell you the products that were used.......

Makeup Shoott! Part 2

Actually this was the first look we had designed for the model. It was all about being beautiful and revealing an innocent radiance. The perfect word to describe this look is 'angelic'. A glow of white gold on the face and a magical aura around is what the photographer had in mind.

This was so far the easiest look to do and I have used minimal powder (just under eyes actually) and very very light layer of foundation. The look is ethereal and very high fashion.

The model is wearing a tube top and only her decollete is exposed so please remember there is no nudity involved. It is for pure aesthetics!

So lets see how to get the look...........

Makeup Shoot! Part 1

I got to work with some amazing people for a lovely test photoshoot and here is the outcome. The photographer and the hair stylist were amazing and lovely to work with.

The Leprechaun Party

To continue with the 'Bevy of Envy' series which also coincided with St.Patrick's day I present another look with greens. Here's my story........

I was inspired by mystical greens that spelled serenity and divinity through a smokey eye without looking evil or wicked. This is one of the multiple facets a green color has. Green could be jealousy or evil but at the same time it could be prosperity or divine.

Lets get to the look............

Rimmel comes to INDIA ....a sneak peak!

Cult Brit brand Rimmel will soon make its presence on Indian shores and pass on some of the best stuff they have been retailing abroad to us.

Founded by Mr.Eugene Rimmel, its one of the most popular cosmetic brands in the world, with a motto 'Get the London look!'. Read the fantastic history of Rimmel here.

So I got to choose some stuff for Spring 2012 and swatch and it and put it on the blog. These are only swatches and previews (happened over a span of an hour and half and a lovely coffee) and I haven't really got any products to go into the depth.

Have a look!!!

Review : Estee Lauder Pure Gloss in Brazen Berry!

Long gone are the times when Estee Lauder was only a skin care for older women. Today with so many younger colors appealing to the youth and such ground breaking innovative products, Estee Lauder caters to the younger generation with a bevy of amazing products. May it be a Pure gloss or  Double wear foundation or Sumptuous Bold Mascara, Estee Lauder just spells 'L.U.X.U.R.Y' in the boldest words (and boldest prices too thanks to the new budget).

Today I am reviewing Estee Lauder's Pure Color lipgloss in Brazen Berry available in India for 1700 INR approx.

So let's have a look..............

4 to the Naked!

I have a lot of backlog of certain looks which are not tutorials and I wanted to finish them off. I got my Urban Decay Naked 2 palette on 11th Feb 2012 and immediately my hands itched to create this lovely look using just 4 colors from the palette. This is one of the looks that I did early and wanted to post it asap.

Naked 2 palette is one of the palettes that I really love and have a lot of looks that are done and to be done for April 2012. This is just one of them and its not a tutorial.

Lets see how to do this look........

Shamrock-ing!

For the next look in 'Bevy of Envy' I decided to go very very green. Its a bright green all over that looks smoldering and amazing. Think of 'Poison Ivy' from Batman movie and this could be the look you would want to don. Think of St.Patrick's day (next year maybe). Think of lovely and friendly leprechauns.

This is a look that incorporates a variety of greens ranging from bottle greens to grassy greens all taken from the amazing BH cosmetics 88 matte and 88 shimmer palette. There are too many greens in different textures and finishes.
Lets see how to do this look............

An Experiment with Human Fundamentalism!!

Illamasqua cosmetics have been kind enough to send me products for reviewing from their 'Human Fundamentalism' collection. I was enthralled and so full of excitement that I decided to take this product review to another level. Instead of doing the same review and talking the same cliched things what every beauty blogger would do I thought of doing a look that could show my altered ego. And this is what I conjured.

I was sent 4 products from their line which are the key products in the look along with other options since I don't own much of Illamasqua line.

This concept inspired me to an Egyptian theme with gold accents on brows and lips and then apply colors of the desert sand and desert night. God Ra and his rise and fall as the day passes was also another inspiration for this story. Amidst the look you will also find the review of the sent products.

So lets have a look at my altered ego look and a small talk about the mentioned products....

HAPPY St.PATRICK's DAY

Wish you all a very Happy St.Patrick's day. Its all about 'greens' and leprechauns today. As I wasn't able to coin a perfect name for the series, my best friend and a true fashionista Dr.Abhishek Subhash suggested me a lovely name. He calls it 'Bevy of Envy' where sassy greens meet acids and pure greens create an aura of harmony. Its a weird world, a weird color and bit of altered ego.

In this look I got inspired from how a matte object would reflect in a river under the sun......It is very inspirational and instead of creating something avantgarde I chose something simple and easy. Lets see how to do this look....

Three Blushketeers.....

This post is inspired from a question on amazing reader asked me. This question was on mixing different blushes and different textures and how to do that. So I thought of doing a post called 'Blush-keteers' again inspired from Three Musketeers...

I love blushes and would love to own all the blushes from all the brands. Thanks to the new technologies now mixing and matching textures like colors has become easy and possible and millions of thanks to 'Silicones'. There is a group of people who maybe allergic to silicones but I guess they dont exist in India. Btw please let me know if you know of anyone who is allergic to silicones and parabens. Would love to ask them a few questions on their skin care.

NOTE : - This is my first face pic on my blog. Please don't mind the receding hairline and sagging jawline.

Lets see how to get this flushed look with 3 products of different textures..........

Artemis the Moon Goddess!!

Due to some unknown reasons my article on Artemis the Moon Goddess has become very famous on Beauty Traveller. Somehow it got the most hits so I thought of doing a tutorial with that beautiful goddess as an inspiration.

Doing makeup for a moon goddess is not so easy. She may be cool but has preferences. I did what I could do to make her look the best before she attended Winter Solstice. (a story)

I wish I was a bit fair to don this look better but its a look that would go on everyone provided you go a bit charcoal and silvery according to your complexion. Please note that I am looking a bit tired in this look because I am (did this look immediately after coming from the photoshoot).

Lets see how to do this look.......................

The Makeup Story : Look 2

This look was an eco-friendly look inspired from a wood nymph or a forest fairy. This look is very fresh, sunkissed, dewy and glowing. All the features in this look are enhanced and a soft focus is created to make it more ethereal and angel like.

Lets see how to do this look...........

The Makeup Story : Look 1 Tutorial

This is the first look that I did for the photoshoot. It was inspired from innocent mermaids or fresh water nymphs with colors taken from the ocean. The glitter adds a beautiful dimension to the look making it more ethereal and supernatural.

This look can be done outside also with the colors limiting to the lid and not going beyond that. Keep the rest of the face clean and glowing to match the vivid eye colors

Lets see how to do the look..............

The Makeup Story : Prepping

The photoshoot was scheduled at Andheri on 10th March for a photography workshop for J&M Studios where the concept was to shoot beauty and elegance. With minimal hair and minimal styling, the theme was totally makeup.
I was told by Olya that she wanted bold colors diffusing into each other. Some colors needed extra oomph so glitter came in and she strictly told me not to use too much mascara, no falsies and no black liners. I got her point as it would have turned into too dramatic makeup and they wanted the model to look like a freshwater nymph and/or a fairy.

The Model was a dream to work with. Hailing from Ukraine, she's been an international model and has the poise in lines of Gemma Ward or Natalia Vodianova. She was ready for some pics that I took on the silliest camera in the photoshoot. Btw almost everyone had huge Canon cameras and I was so happy to see all of them. The lighting was by Broncolor and one of the most brilliant lightings I have ever come across.

So here are a few pics and their descriptions............

The Makeup Story : The Haul!

Prepping for a beauty shoot is not an easy affair. Sometime even after having MACs and Inglots in your stash and Lancome, Clinique, Dior, NARS, BH cosmetics etc. you still do need something here and there.
I made a list and picked up all the things that were not included as usual. With spending up a whopping Rs.7500 approx. I had crossed my budget severely but this was a future investment.

Lets see the haul................

The Makeup Story

I recently got to work with an internationally acclaimed photographer duo Jaf and Olya of J&M Studios who were kind enough to give me an opportunity to do makeup for a photography workshop called A to Z Photography masterclass.

Here is a glimpse of makeups I did. I am putting pictures clicked by Prashant Samtani (one of the participants of the workshop). Shall put green room pics and makeup breakups in the upcoming posts. Tell me what you feel looking at these pictures.

I hope you all like these. Do wait for the story behind this amazing photoshoot and the links. These pictures are for illustration use only and not for commercial purposes. I hope people bear this in mind (beware cunning minds before stealing the pictures)

An award-worth PERFORMANCE by Sigma Beauty

Since I don't flaunt much of my stash and products and all who know me a bit would know what a huge fan of Sigma Brushes I am. I have been buying quite a lot of their high quality brushes since 2009 end (when Sigma had named their brushes with MAC numbering) and now. Although I look for offers like free shipping sometimes it gets beyond human mind control and the impulse gets me buying something.

If you are a makeup artist, an artist or love art then you would realize how important it is to have brushes that translate your vision and creativity on the facial canvas. These tricky tools that add precision and detailing are not easy to find especially in India and they never came in a set till some days ago.

Sigma launches PERFORMANCE eye brush set which needs an applause. Lets see why......

Review : Girlactik Star Eyeshadow SATIN

I had shot these pictures a while ago but never dared to post a review and then forgot about it. I am going to review some of the rare to find products from some unsung heroes like Girlactik and I sincerely hope you enjoy them.

I bought this eyeshadow from The Beauty Bar in Andheri owned by Kamya Sangodkar for Rs.950 but you can also buy it from Cherry Culture (with additional shipping costs).

So lets have a look at this unheard beauty.............................

Spring Brights

This spring is all about bright makeup. Bright pinks and coral on eyes, cheeks and lips play to create a wonderful palette this spring season.
Today I was inspired to do a neon pink in the crease. I have always been taught in the beauty school and also quoted by a famous makeup artist that 'pink' should never be used in crease and as a highlight. It maybe true at that time when there were not many great pinks in the beauty market.  But now situations are different. Pinks combined with cooler or warmer tones and different kinds of shimmer impart incredible performance on eye lids and help break the rule.
In this look I have used a 'neon bright shimmery pink eyeshadow' with a modern touch.

I used my famous BH cosmetics 120 eyeshadow palette in 4th edition which is an ultra shimmer palette with various duo chrome eyeshadows and metallic foiling eyeshadows that you might not even find in most well known brands.
Also I am going to suggest a dupe to this look for the ones who are brand conscious. These dupes are mentioned in the tutorial and not products used.

So lets see how to do this amazing neon pink makeup.

Skin Chronicles : - Cleansers

Cleansing is the first and the most primary step  in a skin care regimen. A good cleanser helps clean skin of all dirt and grime, takes away surface oil that could tend to clog pores, wash away any cellular debris that has settled on the skin  and give a clean surface for toners, exfoliators, serum and moisturizers to work better. Cleansing is India is perceived as Cleansing milk (for some unknown reasons) but it actually means any product that cleans the surface of the skin and prepares it.

I believe in gentle cleansing. Gentle cleansing gives the right amount of TLC your skin needs. Cleansing is not about splashing water on your skin or using harsh soaps that leave a tingling drying sensation behind. Harsh cleansers makes skin weaker, strip away all the natural oils skin needs to maintain its equilibrium and leaves it vulnerable to fine lines, wrinkles and blemishes. Harsh cleansing methods like vigorous rubbing of skin doesnt do any good at all too. Vigorous rubbing stimulates skin to purge even more oil on the face making you feel extremely oily within  half an hour of cleansing if not moisturized.

In this post, I am going to highlight some cleansing products I absolutely adore and recommend and my way of doing the right cleansing.........

Smokey Night makeup

I always wanted to do some easy sparkling smokey eyes for evenings and this post has been lying in my 'drafts' unseen and unheard since December (sorry for being a bit clumsy). I just saw this and decided to post it asap.

Not necessarily all evening and night makeups are dark. Its just that the lighting in nights defines the eyes better when they are kohl rimmed and the sparkle adds a festive touch to the look. I am a big fan of intense fierce smokey eyes and nude lips and this is one of those awesome and easy evening looks.

Lets see, how to do this look..........

Crystal Clear Purple!!

Purple can create some of the most smoldering eye makeups and flatter any skin color. Its my favorite color and so is the favorite of GODS. Did you know? Purple was the rarest dye obtained in the ancient times so it was only used for making clothes and adornments for GODS (offerings) and Royal Families. The typical 'Rani' color gets its name from there. If you are interested do read the history of Purple color here.

I called this look 'Crystal Clear Purple' because I was inspired from an ink drop in a glass of water (initial stages before it is homogenized). This eye makeup gives almost the same effect.

I used the famed Urban Decay 15th Anniversary Palette to do this simple yet beautiful and bright purple look. What I like about UD is that the colors are true to what you get in the palette and go on so smooth like a cream eyeshadow. I know it is powder, but it glides and gives effect of a cream. Simply amazing. Anyone who wants to order Urban Decay or Too Faced Palette please contact Kamya Sangodkar from The Beauty Bar. She also has amazing deals in Bobbi Brown, Giorgio Armani Beauty, Benefit, Stila and promises not to hurt your pockets.

Lets have a look at the look................

Very Berry!

This is a look inspired from squashes of berries (blackberries and blueberries to be precise). Berries are not only rich in anti-oxidant but also one of the healthiest fruits known. This has got nothing to do with this post though! I simply like the glaze on the skins when light falls and after watching an episode of Nigella Lawson, I immediately decided take this as an inspiration.

I have always loved to incorporate food inspired themes for makeup being a big foodie and this post is one of them. What I like about berry colors is that these are group of colors that suit everyone and are perfect for evening wear (I have seen women wearing Berry colors on their eyes, cheeks and lips even to office and they immediately catch my eye). May it be a berry colored stain or a deep purple berry juice drenched eye, its all about being bold and mysterious. I could call this as an 'anti-oxidant' look (in a non-benefitting way, although Clinique's new cream eyeshadows have anti-oxidants in them but not obtained from berries)

Mix any berry color with shimmer and the eyes simply pop (intermix of berry darkness and intense reflective property of the shimmer or glitter) and so do lips. I love berry colored cheeks as well (it gives a flush of some intense exercise  which I would need to fake...LOL) and goes incredibly well with yellow tones, sallow tones, olive skins and darker skin tones. Berry colored stains  from Tarte are my next purchases coming soon and I believe 'berry' is one group of colors that would never go off-season.

In this look I am inspired from squashes of blackberries and blueberries and the froth that appears when they are juiced up in a mixer. If anyone remembers and drools please make one for yourself now itself..Lets see how to do this look!

Pink for an evening drink!

I feel so proud when some dedicated readers tell me to do certain looks. I feel confident, motivated and most importantly realize that the efforts I put in making some of the tutorials happen are not going waste. Thanks a million for all the support. Please pardon the title name, you dont have to drink with this look on...:)) (PJ)

This post is one of the easy posts I have been making with a long term obsession for BH Cosmetics 88 Tropical shimmer palette. Since it has 88 eyeshadows imagine the permutations and combinations that can be made so please pardon me if you come across this palette more than a million times. What I love about this palette is that the colors are very pigmented and ultra shimmery and adhere very well to the eye lids (best with primer underneath). The color palette is inspired by the Caribbean and the Mediterranean and these are some amazing combinations.

I have chosen the colors marked with stars for this looks and trust me . that there are only 4 colors. This means that this is a quick pink eye which is hassle free and very glamorous at the same time. This makeup could be perfect for evening parties and soft candle light dinners. The Sakura pink eyeshadow is so delicately placed on the lids that it emanates an innocent glow in candle light and looks incredibly romantic. This could also be an easy and quick bridal look if applied tastefully.

So lets begin with the look...............

Makeup Masterclass : Flawless glowing skin!

In the sequel of the masterclass post of getting a flawless glowing skin, I wanted to add another post of how to get a glowing skin for different skin types. Trust me even if it sounds the same, the steps are different (with the same product) and sometimes application methods are varied.

Btw 'ITS IMPORTANT TO INCLUDE SOME HEALTHY OIL IN YOUR FOOD AS OIL PROVIDES A SHEEN ON SKIN. YOU DON'T WANT TO DIET WRONGLY AND END UP LOOKING DULL AND DRY. My dietician made me restrict oil usage to 1 spoon a day and after a month my skin started feeling abnormally dry and itchy. I asked my doctor friend and thats what he said. So I started on COD LIVER CAPSULES per day (rich in omega 3) and got back the glow. (Do it if you feel like.)

Since I have an oily skin (combination in winters) I have always been on a hunt for such kind of products.
Let it be a dewy complexion or a milky creamy skin......its just so easy to achieve. Lets see how to get a glowing skin according to your skin type...

Chucked stuff!

Please don't forsake me for revealing a truth that happened a few days back. I have been a makeup collecting psycho long back and now buy makeup or products that would only be used and not kept. I had collected so many items in blushers, lipsticks, eyeshadows and mascaras and was feeling proud until the day came.........

Most of these lovelies got expired and I feel so bad that I had to abandon them with a heavy heart. Few days ago I told on a blog that I have discarded 10 mascaras out of which 4 were Clinique. I have been collecting makeup products since 2005 and now its 7 yrs in a row.The story doesn't end there....

Makeup Masterclass : Flawless Spring sheen

Looking fresh and even toned is a sign of healthy skin at any age and for any skin color. Adding a bit of sheen on the skin to create a lovely dewy effect has become very easy these days thanks to all the wonderful brands that bring out their own version of unique color blends and oil free formulas.Once upon a time, a cream blush could be used only by ladies with a dry skin but today with changed times there are super-easy to use oil free formulas that can make ones with oilier skin look slick..

Makeup artists like Pat McGrath (@patmcgrathreal) or Diane Kendal or our very own Lisa Eldridge always talk about dewy gorgeous fresh looking skin. Its that lovely glow that we want and that radiance we want to emanate and this masterclass is all about getting that glowing skin this Spring 2012.

I also want to clear a doubt of how oily this can look for ones with oily skins? I would say, use it on areas of the face that are not oily and find your best friend in blotting paper box.......Anyways lets see how to get a dewy glowy fresh skin irrespective of your skin type..

The Blue Cut!

To conclude 'Into the Blue' series, I was inspired by Illamasqua's famous Sophie-I technique, a cut crease smokey eye created by maverick Alex Box with proceedings from their sale going to Sophie Lancaster Foundation. There was a big buzz about this cut crease smokey eye and it did add another feather to this legendary makeup style.

I wanted to add my own twist to this technique and thought of using a bright shimmery sky blue to do the cut crease look.

This also happens to be one of the simplest looks I have done till now and its very malleable for anyone who wants to do a quick night-out makeup. Do make your own additions and I would love if you want to share them too.

Lets see how to do this easy-effortless-yet-glamorous-look.......
