Do you dream of a life-altering-brighter-whiter smile or obliterating the gap between your two front teeth? You know, the ones that the celebrities have and that grace the covers of supermarket magazine aisles. If you do, finding the right cosmetic dentist is right up your alley. And it’s not easy, there are many people who claim to be experts in cosmetically changing your smile, but actually are not. But, with the right information, you can find the perfect fit for your mouth.

Don’t just take the dentist’s word for it! Find out what the focus of their practice is through internet searches, and take time to ask the office what procedures they do most often. Offices that spend their whole day doing routine checkups are not for you. Currently, there is no certification or board approval to call yourself a cosmetic dentist, so it’s pretty easy to say you are one – even if you spend only five percent of your time working in the field.  However, since a lot of cosmetic procedures are not covered by insurance, most of these dentists make a lot of their money from people who pay out of pocket and will do a great deal of both advertising as well as creating their own online content. These pieces of information allow you to do a quick background search and confirm a specialization in cosmetic dentistry. Also, check out the  American Association of Cosmetic Dentistry for some good options.

Ask a friend! Put it out there that you’re looking to make your smile perfect. You’d be surprised who knows someone who knows someone that either had a fabulous or awful experience with a dentist. You would definitely want to avoid the DDS who made your friend look like a casting option for the next Twilight film. But, on the other hand, you would want to run to the dentist that perfected your best friend’s grin.  As with a lot of medical fields, cosmetic dentists thrive on recommendations and might be willing to give out names of previous patients as a recommendation as well.

Get a second, a third, and a fourth opinion:

It’s not wrong to get multiple opinions, which is something a lot of people struggle with, especially in this field. Make sure to visit multiple offices and see what they have to offer. It’s crucial to make sure that you’re idea of what your mouth should look like matches up with the dentist's thoughts and expertise. One dentist might think that you’re not a good candidate for something, while the second and third could disagree. Also, since most of their work is paid out of pocket, you should also be able to do a price comparison on the procedures. Don’t sacrifice quality for a bargain, but also don’t be afraid to shop around!

  8. Thank you very much for this information. I've always been very self-conscious about my smile and I want that to change. I'm looking for a cosmetic dentist, but I'm not sure what qualities I should look for when hiring one. Your advice to find out what the focus of the practice is was very helpful. I'll be sure to do that.
