Review : Kryolan Ultra Foundation Palette - OLIVE

This is a review of one of the best foundations I have ever used. What a mistake I made for not knowing or not acknowledging even after knowing, that this foundation was so so so so good. You want a flawless perfection, transparent looking skin and super model like glow, then here is one of the answers that I present to you.

Please read after the jump break...........

One of my primary goals to achieve a transparent luminous glowing flawless skin is choosing the perfect foundation. For me, liquids are easy to use but carrying so many bottle and clanking all the time is not what one would do. Then the shade range in liquids is very limited and sometimes if there are a spectra of skin colors to cover, its better to take a foundation palette. All this while I was stuck to Kryolan Supra Palette - a fabulous oil-cream based foundation that gives an air brush like coverage and porcelain finish. But I wasn't happy. I was out there looking for a foundation group that could match my needs and for the first time I thought of asking the SA at Kryolan Oshiwara store. She (don't remember her name) was so understanding and helpful and did not hesitate in answering my doubts at all and I ended up buying this gem of a palette.

What Kryolan has to say?
Ultrafoundation is a cream foundation specially formulated for the most demanding make-up expectations. As a result of its excellent covering quality, Ultrafoundation is also effective as a corrective make-up. Transparent application of Ultrafoundation is also suitable for photographic work. Its matt finish provides models with a naturally attractive appearance.
The Ultrafoundation formulation contains advanced ingredients that are recognised for particulary good skin compatibility. This formulation contains no mineral oil, to assure that the skin readily absorbs the make-up.
This foundation is available in a wide range of more than 70 shades.
There are no 70 shades in India though and they just sell one palette of 12 colors in the OLIVE range suiting a wide variety of skin tones in Indian women in lighter and medium tones.

PACKAGING AND INGREDIENTS

I love Kryolan packaging the most. Its simple, sturdy and withholds a lot of wear and tear due to frictional changes while travelling. The dove grey cover is simply appealing to me as it reminds me of the silver moon.
The ingredients are also quite appealing and would suit sensitive skins as there are no irritating ingredients as such except that it has fragrance ( although sensitive skins should use this foundation with caution any which ways). Although they say its Mineral Oil free, I am not sure what 'Petrolatum' is. The waxes make this foundation suitable for oily and combination skin types but with a good cover of moisture underneath it would appeal to drier skins too.

FORMULA

This lovely old school compass box like Aluminium casing consists 12 shades in color called 'O' which symbolizes 'Olive' and its surely going to be there as the palette is Olive. Abroad they also have a palette in shades of Peach and Caribbean but as far as I know they dont sell it in the India. It has about 40 gm of product which makes each well about 3.3 gms. and these last for a very long time as the product required is very very less.

There are 12 refillable pots or wells of foundation arranged in a pattern side by side into 2 rows. The plastic covering ensure hygiene and prevents dust from layering over. In the refills purchased individually this is not available so I suggest to retain this plastic cover to put over the new refill.

These shades are a in lovely neutral and warm tones and really help bring out a range of complexions. The formula feels like 'low fat butter' with a touch of waxiness and can be layered from sheer to a full coverage. The best part is it does not look cakey even if it is piled on and unlike Supra foundation no other extra effort is needed for application.

I use sponges, fingers and foundation brushes, all at different places and the application is similar with any of the methods used. Just that after its applied I prefer using a buffing brush or a polishing duo fiber brush to create a seamless finish. Although I have noticed that after patting the foundation with fingers it impart a faint yet not unnoticeable dewiness on the face. The formula is not at all oily and does dry out to a semi matte finish and so setting with powder is not necessary always. I use Kryolan Translucent Powder to set this foundation most of the times and then I spray on Dermacolor Makeup Fixer spray to make it long lasting.

This is the most versatile foundation. It can be used on daily basis too and really creates this amazing finish which is apt for office wear too. This could be your go to foundation for occasions and it promises a long lasting coverage. It has this amazing slip that one looks for and takes a moderate amount of time to dry and set unlike MAC Pro Longwear foundation which sets in a jiffy. This is my go to foundation for bridals and photography and with it versatility it does an amazing job everywhere.

The swatches are taken on white paper to show the color as it was completely blending on my NC 40 hand.

HOW TO APPLY
  1. To maintain utmost levels of hygiene while on a makeup job, I suggest using a spatula to remove the desired amount of product. You can also direct dip but ensure that you sanitize the surface with a makeup disinfecting mist. Cream based foundations are harbinger to a lot of microbes and can cause disease that are unthinkable so this is a preventive measure.
  2. When applied with fingers, small strokes of dabbing and blending seem the best. This is not a liquid foundation but the consistency is almost semi-liquid. This allows a lovely blendability and slip for the product when applied with fingers. I use fingers to apply foundation in the under eye area.
  3. With sponge it gives the sheerest coverage ever. This is because a lot of product gets wiped with sponge. I used a damp sponge and the coverage was almost like air brushing.
  4. With a foundation brush which is my favorite way of application, the foundation can be really painted on the face with short or long strokes as desired. Even though stippling is the best way of application but painting is equally good too. The foundation's texture allows it to spread evenly and seamlessly into skin.
  5. When used with a Natural Hair foundation brush, it offers an almost air brushed light finish and looks stunning on camera.
LAYERING
  • Ultra foundation can be layered over a liquid foundation and it gels well without separating or looking cakey.
  • A cream based foundation like Supra foundation or Bobbi Brown stick foundation can be layered over or under Ultra foundation and the coverage is good yet flawless and you really cant see any harshness or heaviness on the face.
  • Ultra foundation can be set with Translucent powder for a natural finish but one can also use heavier powder foundations like Estee Lauder Double Wear compact or MAC Studio Fix powder foundation to take the coverage to a different level.
  • I haven't really used Mineral makeup over this product to see how it goes. As it is I despise Minerals for face as they look very shiny and skin gets oily faster. So I leave it on some one else to comment on that.
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY

If found out carefully the Ultra foundation palette is available in Official Kryolan stores and many more places. It retails for 2750 INR a palette and is also available in stick form for 900 INR each. The refillable ones come for 300 INR each. Ultra foundation is also available in liquid form which I am not very keen to purchase right now. That may be good for office time users.

    1. Goss was right as stippling brush is not very convenient for dry skins since it causes micro exfoliation. these foundations are amazing and suitable for oily skins...u must try them out especially for photoshoots and all

  8. Good Survey Neeraj, i heard that according to indian undertone FS related shades will be suitable and more over 303 is most suitable shade for Indian Skin Type. so what do you suggest if i want to go for this pallete, either FS or Olive shades, please suggest..

    1. hi Mounika.. in case of that you should get their individual colors or stick foundations as then you can custom make your palette...FS is what I like from TV series or Supra foundations. If you have tried the Ultra foundation you would love the Olive range.

  10. Hi Neeraj,

I really enjoy reading your blog as it is very informative and educational. I'd like to ask you if you know what is the Kryolan Ultra Foundation closest match for a NC35/Warm Natural skin tone? I am South East Asian with yellow undertones..

I have tried OB3, I think it is a bit too dark and orangey..
