The Perfect LIP!!

Its been a long long long long time since I have done 'application' posts like this. Thanks to a couple of blogger friends who encouraged me to be creative and start posting eye makeup looks and I went overboard doing as many as I could post, forgetting the makeup teacher in me.

Today I am going to talk and share some of my opinions about getting the perfect lip, with or without a lip liner while quoting the benefits of each. So do keep reading........

I reiterate again,

THE LEAD IN LIPSTICKS WAS A RUMOUR AND SPAM THAT HAS BEEN ACTIVE ENOUGH TO SCARE PEOPLE'S MINDS EVEN NOW. HOWEVER THE RANDOM FACTS MADE IN THAT SPAM WERE QUESTIONABLE AND HAS MADE MAJOR DEPARTMENT AND DRUGSTORE BRANDS VIGILANT ENOUGH TO MANUFACTURE THEIR LIPSTICKS IN THE HIGHEST STANDARDS AND PLEASE DO NOT FORGET THAT 'LEAD' IS AVAILABLE ABUNDANTLY IN THE ENVIRONMENT THANKS TO POLLUTION FOR WHICH WE ARE RESPONSIBLE. SO PLEASE THINK TEN TIMES BEFORE PROUDLY TALKING ABOUT THIS STUPID JOKE IN FRONT OF KNOWN BRANDS LIKE CHANEL AND YSL WITHOUT KNOWING THE TRUTH AND PLEASE DO NOT MAKE AN IDIOTIC STATEMENT THAT COULD TARNISH THE BRAND WHEN THERE'S NO FAULT OF THEIR. THIS STATUTORY INFORMATION IS IN FAVOR OF ALL THE AMAZING AND BEAUTIFUL READERS OF BEAUTY TRAVELLER.

Doing makeup to lips is more than a lipstick. Its all about the right lip care, the amazing lip products and most importantly the confidence to carry the color. The more you search and buy the better it is. According to me there are few product categories you should own to get the perfect lipstick everyday. I am not dealing with the shape of the lips and all such. This is a general article regarding lip care and donning the right lipstick. Some of these are optional and its OK not to own everything from this comprehensive list (you may not need most of the items).
  • Lip scrub
  • Lip Balm
  • Lipsticks
  • Lip liner
  • Lip gloss
  • Lip exfoliators (with salicylic acid)
  • Lip primer
  • Lip plumper
  • Lip serum
  • Lip sun care
  • Eye and lip balm
  • Lip Oils
  • Lip butters
  • Lip Venoms
  • Lip treatments (a random amalgamation of many of above products with seriously no claims of doing anything specific)
  • Lip Fix
etc. The list is endless as the market gets a surge of lip products suddenly pouring in happening season after season with new names all the time.
Each have some or other ways to care of lips in a special manner. Btw did you know, 'lips' are the starting of our Gastrointestinal tract and thats why they are different from the skin on the face. Although skin does envelope them into stratified squamous non keratinized epithelium but is devoid of sweat and oil glands and suppleness of the lips is just due to maintenance of 'Natural Moisturizing Factor' and water in the body.

YOUR LIPS BUT BETTER

There are certain key points that one must follow like,
  • Keeping the lips super hydrated externally by applying a long lasting hyaluronic acid based product that enable lip plumping.
  • Using a long lasting lip color which is comfortable wear throughout the office hours. Even a normal wax based lipstick can really last long.
  • Lip colors that enhance the natural lip color and natural contours of the lips when you want to look fresh and demure.
SUPER-HYDRATED LIPS

Its required to exfoliate the skin over lips as it is dry and lacks the natural moisturizing factor. So to enhance the moisturizing effects one must exfoliate for a fresh batch of moisture receptive cells to come up. Did you know that lips also have collagen and their break down causes wrinkling of lips? So its better to have them plumped and boost up collagen formation using a lot of products. The earlier you start the better you fare in the later years.

Apply a lip treatment product that consists of dehydrated hyaluronic acid beads (for penetration of the product into lips from the skin matrix) that go into the lips and plump them up by swelling up like water balloons. Since hyaluronic acid is a component of collagen, our body recognizes it and loves it like any thing. Some of the companies use irritants like Ginger root oil or Cinnamon etc. to boost up the microcirculation in the lips and cause a plumping effect but I am against this method as everyone cannot go for it. It might end up in allergies and cause pigmentation on lips (one of the causes).

Coming towards pigmentation of lips, it could be genetic or acquired (due to various wrong practices of handling and caring for your lips). This starts from using very low branded products that contain harmful chemicals staining or getting deposited in the lip matrix. Also one of the main reasons is not using a sunscreen for lips which can cause deteriorating effects on lips and thus lip pigmentation. Ridiculous habits like lip biting etc just adds to the lip trauma causing pigmentation as one of the outcomes (do not get inspired by Vidya Balan's role in a dirty movie as she was paid to do so...LOL). Many more factors and illnesses are responsible for this and one can consult a dermatologist to get rid of it with most modern and amazing methods.

Using 'lip balms' is a good alternative to take care of the lips. The waxes and oils help to soothe chapped skin and soften it so that the lips feel smooth and comfortable. They also act as moisture occlusives and do not allow dehydration of the lips and trust me this is all a lip balm does. So it doesn't matter how expensive or cheap a lip balm is, the function remains the same. I advice using a lip balm once a day and not continuously as this does hamper the natural ability of your lips to prepare its own defensive mechanisms against harsh environment. A sunscreen specially formulated for lips (it does have its own hazards so important to being vigilant about the brand) does work wonders and keeps lips younger. This could be an in built sunscreen in a lipstick or lip gloss or separate one, it does work in reducing pigmentation and minimizing ageing of lips. Also look for other moisturizing agents like shea butter, grape fruit oil etc and lip soothing agents like chamomile for extra benefits.

For a normal human being devoid of debilitating diseases of heart or kidneys, optimum water levels in the body are important to maintain luscious good looking lips. As lips are one of the best conduits for moisture to evaporate, signs of dehydration are amongst the first to be noticed here. So be careful that you do not dehydrate or consume too many beverages that can have a diuretic effect on body.

LONG LASTING LIP COLORS

We always crave to have our lips looking the best at all times even after all that they have to go through. Hence to minimize the touch-ups (considered over-smartness in India) companies strive to bring out a lot of products for lips that help the color stay put. I have noticed that lipsticks with silicones (to plump up and seal the colors) helps a lot but they are not so prevalent in the market. Next to that are super waxy and super pigmented lipsticks that do the job effortlessly and equally well.

For a long lasting lipstick choose a formula that is not very smooth or buttery. Since they have a high oil content they get washed off easily especially if you eat oily foods. Look for formulas that are a little hard and pigment rich. No one can beat brands like Estee Lauder, L'OReal and Lancome for creating some amazing long lasting lip shades but almost every company now a days is entering the bandwagon. Also its better to choose a matte lipstick over a shimmery glossy one as the former adheres better to the lips.

Also worth mentioning are the long lasting lipsticks from Max Factor, MAC Pro longwear and Colorbar etc which are excellent solutions for bridals et al who has to go through a lot of things and withstand for longer hours. These lipsticks have special volatile oils or silicones that layer the pigment over the lips and literally evaporate leaving behind a pigment that sticks hard to the lips and can be removed only with a particular lipstick remover. The problem with these are that they make the lips really dry and flaky and on long run can be a pain as one has to rub vigorously to remove the color.

Now I want to reveal a trick learnt from a lot of makeup artists all over. Exfoliate and moisturize to make your lips supple. A lip color can only stay if it is applied over smooth lip surface and not on chapped lips and the color would fall off with the dry cells. Apply your favorite lipstick directly from the bullet and then purse and smack your lips together so that the color is spread and dispersed evenly all across. When you have done this, layer the lip color again. Now blot with a tissue and literally dust some loose powder to absorb all the moisture and oil and seal the color on the lips. Again layer the color and then use a lip brush to spread the color properly. Layer till desired and lock the color (ref. of Marilyn Monroe, where just a sheer volume of color used to make her lips so sensuous and iconic) again and again. End up by lining the lips with a lip liner to prevent the color from bleeding or feathering. Add a touch of gloss (a sticky one preferably) on the centre of lips to create a pout and that should be all.

In case this option doesn't work for you then you must opt for the long lasting lipsticks.

ENHANCING THE LIP COLOR AND THE LIP CONTOUR

Everyone may not be blessed with perfect lips but everyone is blessed with an innate talent to make them best out of what they have. To enhance the lip contours I strongly recommend using a lip contouring pencil which is colorless silicone pencil that helps enhance the shape of the lips in a lovely manner. This technique may not go for people with pigmentation around the lips and can be a bit difficult to master. Secondly to create perfect lips one must erase the natural lines and create new ones. Apply concealer on the sides of the lips and erase the natural lip lines in case you have uneven lips. Then with a natural rose colored pencil trace and outline the lips in a desired manner. Fill in the lips with lip liner and then use a desired lip color.

To enhance lip colors one must believe in the theory of low lights and highlights. This means to use darker colors on the sides of the lips and lighter and brighter on the centre of lips to create that flower petals like effect. This technique should be only and only used for pink and red lip tones and not neutrals as it would very very cliched.

As you see this article is more of what everyone really knows and maybe a small eye opener for others. But it also keep a lot of doors open so that you can ask the questions that you desire in the comments section and take part in an interactive conversation regarding this subject.

Hope you find the article useful.

Till then,

Ciao

    1. Hi...both may sound the same...but lip scrub is a scrub like a physical exfoliator while Lip exfoliators are lip balms with salicylic acid to gently slough off dead cells and retain lip color. hence i called scrubs for physical ones while exfoliators for chemical ones....they are all safe though!
