Review : Guerlain Cils D'Enfer Mascara - Best mascara of 2013

Every year NEW mascaras are born...but there are some which make to the top charts. These are the performing mascaras that are the haute couture of the Beauty world. Guerlain Cils D'Enfer Maxi Lash Mascara is one of those amazing mascaras that made it to kits of Pros and amateurs and has been raved about everywhere in the beauty world.

A lot of thought process goes behind making a mascara and its always a hit or miss situation. When department brands make a mascara, its for highly selective audience who has to be kept enticed and that's the reason why they would not compensate on any of the smallest thing. Saying so, lets have a look at one of my favorite mascaras of 2013.........Guerlain Cil's D'Enfer mascara................

Guerlain shares their pearls of wisdom.........

A charming trump card and an irresistible weapon of seduction... Maxi Lash dresses up, intensifies and enhances the eyes.

Its extraordinary formula ensures breathtaking volume, curl and hold.

Its secret?

The combined action of three polymers:
  • the first is coating,
  •  the second is softening
  •  and the third is setting.
From the very first stroke, they act together for a simultaneous result in order to plump up and curl the fringe of lashes in a lasting and even way.

Guerlain Cils D'enfer (also translated as 'Lashes from Hell') comes in a beautiful sleek golden tube packaged in a black cardboard case reminiscent of Guerlain's usual packaging. The gold tablet what I call it looks so luxurious and looks as if inspired from the Egyptian pharaohs and Queen Cleopatra. The French know it all when it comes to this boudoir luxury packaging and Guerlain has always been at its helm while drawing its inspirations from so many countries. The tube is made up of tin or plastic I guess, btw.

The ordinary looking Cils D'enfer mascara wand has actually for more to it than it looks. The nylon brush size is medium and smartly cut to cover and coat each and every lash individually and amp them up. In fact the bristles of the brush are hollow nylon tubes which move across in every direction while one wiggles the mascara wand at the base of the lashes and due to the flexibility of the tiny bristles, the brush ends up coating each and every lash nicely. This way you get amazingly long, curled, defined, voluminous and fluffy looking lashes. Talk about Doll-like lashes which is a huge trend amongst French companies and this wand helps achieving that.

I always owe 50% contribution to the formulation of the mascara. If the wand is amazing and the formula is bad, then it does not do justice to the mascara and vice versa. This beautifully scented (Violet floral fragrance) mascara formulation is almost like a gel like mousse in consistency. Its very light weight and thence does not weigh the lashes down. Since its made up of polymers and waxes, it does help the lashes to look in their best way while conditioning them at the same time. It works equally better when layered and 'no stiff lashes' here. Due to the flexibility of the brush and buildability of the formulation, this mascara scores a lot of brownie points in being one of the best mascaras of 2013.

Cils D'Enfer mascara comes in 2 colors - Black and Violet. The 'Black' which I obviously have is ultra black luscious look mascara which make the eye lashes appear glossy and beautiful. And it defines, volumizes, lengthens, curls and lifts the lashes which makes it an amazing mascara to opt for. I believe that they are launching a 'brown' version this Spring which is a good addition to your mascara wardrobe on the days you want to look a bit natural.

This is one of the 'no natural lashes' mascara and is meant for creating dramatic looking lashes for a wide eyed look. Of course you can exercise control on the look by combing through the lashes with a lash comb but that does not solve the purpose of the mascara.

Here is a mascara comparison with some of the leading department store mascaras and what each one does. This is a very individualistic approach and I would urge everyone to go and compare the mascaras before settling on the best one.
  • Guerlain Cils D'Enfer - Voluptuous lashes that are lengthened, curled, defined and lifted. Glossy black lashes.
  • YSL Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils - Dramatically volumized soft fluffy lashes with a bit of spidery effect.
  • Sisley So Intense Mascara - a complete mascara that does it all but is very flexible in achieving the desired look which goes from natural to dramatic lashes.
  • Chanel Le Volume De Chanel - Volumises immensely and curls at the same time. The brush does deposit a lot of formula at the base of the lashes while building the mascara upwards.
  • Dior Diorshow Blackout mascara - Intense black volumized lashes that look almost crazy. Lacks the glossy touch though.
  • Lancome Hypnose Doll's Lashes mascara - More of individually amplifying mascara that amplifies every lash but still gives that natural effect.
  • Clinique High Impact Extreme Mascara - Intense black dramatically volumizing mascara with a wetter formula that can also weigh down the lashes.
These are the comparisons between some of the major mascara performers in the market.

I bought mine from the Shopper Stop in Juhu for 2475 INR and need to get a back up on one more. This mascara has a brilliant sale through and watch out as it goes out of stock instantaneously. Guerlain Cils D'Enfer is available at selected Guerlain counters and Sephora stores in the country.

This is the look that I created using the Guerlain Cils D'Enfer mascara and the famous LORAC PRO palette for holidays.
